Thomas Struth: Photographs 1978-2010 , Hörbuch,...

Once upon a time in Düsseldorf, in the 1970s, there was an astonishing art academy, the Kunstakademie, with amazing teachers, and amazing students. Düsseldorf was a very proud art city, and even published at the time, a book of photographs called Düsseldorf City of Artists. The presence of that great, messianic leader, Joseph Beuys loomed large. Gerhard Richter, (and Gotthard Graubner among others), taught painting, and an outstanding couple, Bernd and Hilla Becher, taught photography. Germany rejoined and even led the avant garde that it had destroyed in the 1930s. The Bechers' own work, photographed in black and white series anonymous, industrial architecture. Included in this broad ranging retrospective of over 30 years of Thomas Struth's photography, is his own early series of city topographies, mostly unpeopled streets in the silvery light of early morning, which were first initiated several years before he was aware of the Bechers' work: zeitgeist, anyone? Struth indeed, initially thought to be a painter, and studied with Gerhard Richter, but then moved laterally to join the Bechers' small student group. 1. Language: English. Rebel against cancer

Are there methods to heal cancer which conventional medicine is keeping from us?Dr. med. Klaus Maar was once an orthodox medical practitioner, surgeon and head of a large university hospital. After many years, during which he almost despaired at the failures of conventional cancer therapies, he took matters into his own hands, working over the long term to develop a "biological intensive therapy". At his outpatients' oncology clinic in Düsseldorf he has been able to achieve excellent successes with the therapy, which has been the subject of many reports in the press and on TV. Thousands of patients from many countries - even from the USA and New Zealand - have reported the success of his, to date, unique therapy. lt bundles biological healing powers which are able to simultaneously destroy cancer cells whilst also consolidating the body's own defences. No cancer is as often incorrectly treated as prostate cancerThis book views itself as an addition to the first book, "Rebel against cancer" [Rebell gegen den Krebs], which explained fundamental principles, going into its conclusions in more detail. lncorrect diagnoses, thousands of unnecessary operations, impotence, agonising chemotherapies and marital problems - the consequences of incorrect or unnecessary treatment have ramifications of which only a few people are aware. In this book the admired, much discussed author continues his campaign to enlighten his patients, calling things by their true names. Many facts which are otherwise concealed are brought to light. This book is the first one - worldwide - explaining biological complementary methods in the treatment of all tumours, especially prostatic carcinoma.

Manfred Sack, in an essay about bridges: »The Latin word ›relegere‹ means to connect. The assumption is that this is the basis of the word religion. The chief priest in Rome was the pontifex maximus, the highest builder of bridges between man and god, between this world and the ›other world‹. The Germanic tribes saw the bridge in the rainbow physically before them, it was their road of light to Valhalla. For those who are disheartened, drugs are the bridge of escape into other, very illusory, worlds of experience. Tradition builds bridges from yesterday to tomorrow. There are so many bridges: music, a letter, the sounds of a radio, phone conversations, light signals, Morse signals, calls. The building of bridges is thus not only a physical process, but a spiritual and emotional event, a longing felt by the soul. No wonder that those who design and calculate bridges, who build them and therefore take risks, at least subconsciously sense some of the extrasensory significance of their sensory activity.« And this is all the more true when we are talking about the bridges across the Rhine, the most important European river, which is wreathed in myths and legends and has inspired poetry and music like no other. Until the 19th century it was crossed almost exclusively by means of ferries. With the onset of industrialization, more and more goods had to be transported increasingly rapidly. Today, over 250 bridges cross the river. They too now shape the unsurpassed diversity of the Rhine landscape. Since 1987, Riehle has photographed some 150 Rhine bridges from the river’s headwaters in Switzerland to the Rhine’s delta in the Netherlands. The most interesting 100 bridges are published in this book. The son of an architect, Riehle was born in 1949 in Triberg in the Black Forest, studied industrial design at the Folkwangschule für Gestaltung in Essen from 1971 until 1975 and fine arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1975 until 1980. In Düsseldorf he was the protégé of the sculptor Erwin Heerich, who created highly noted buildings on the Museum Insel Hombroich that also shaped the artistic thinking of Riehle. Gottfried Knapp worked as a film critic for ten years before starting as art, architecture, and film editor for the arts page of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. His numerous publications on art-historical and architectural themes include monographs on individual buildings and catalogues about painters, sculptors, draughtsmen, and photographic artists. Knapp has won several journalism prizes in the fields of architecture and monument preservation.

Complete Jack The Ripper

Fully updated and revised, Donald Rumbelow's classic work is the ultimate examination of the facts, theories, fictions and fascinations surrounding the greatest whodunit in history. The Complete Jack the Ripper lays out all the evidence in the most comprehensive summary ever written about the Ripper. Rumbelow, a former London Metropolitan policeman, and an authority on crime, has subjected every theory - including those that have emerged in recent years - to the same deep scrutiny. He also examines the mythology surrounding the case and provides some fascinating insights into the portrayal of the Ripper on stage and screen and on the printed page. More seriously, he also examines the horrifying parallel crimes of the Düsseldorf Ripper and the Yorkshire Ripper in an attempt to throw further light on the atrocities of Victorian London.

This representation is an unbalanced one, considering it too much in the light of what is happening five centuries later and not enough in connection with what it replaced.«
